Anita Fernander joins UNM School of Medicine as Executive Diversity Officer

fernander1.jpgAnita Fernander, Ph.Djoined the University of New Mexico School of Medicine as Executive Diversity Officer.

She took over the role, which was filled on an interim basis by John Paul “JP” Sánchez, MD, Associate Assistant Vice Chancellor in the UNM Health Sciences Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Professor of Emergency Medicine.

Fernander will join the School of Medicine’s newly expanded DEI team, which also includes Kathleen Lopez Reyes, MD, Associate Dean for DEI, Veronica L. Plaza, MD, Director of Language Equity Initiatives, and Co-Directors of Curriculum Development, Jessica Goodkind, PhD, (undergraduate medical education) and Anthony Fleg, MD, (healthcare professionals and research education).

“I am grateful and excited to have Dr. Welcoming Fernander as the School of Medicine continues to expand and strengthen its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, particularly in diversifying the workforce from residents, colleagues, faculty and senior administrators and in promoting linguistic equality. ‘ Sanchez said.

Fernander most recently served as Chief Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Officer and Interim Chair and Professor in the Department of Public Health and Social Sciences at the Charles E Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University.

Prior to Florida Atlantic, she held key positions in diversity at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, where she was a founding faculty member at the Center for Health Equity Transformation. Fernander received the Inaugural Excellence in Diversity Faculty Award (2021) and the Inaugural Diversity Champion Award (2018).

Her work includes community-based transformational interventions, as well as training to improve literacy and capacity building to address diversity and health equity. She has built strong alliances with communities and faculties to maintain a catalog of DEI-related activities.
