New Mexico state basketball player ‘lured’ to campus by four UNM students before fatal shooting: police

State of New Mexico Forward Mike Peake, who was involved in a deadly shooting on the University of New Mexico campus over the weekend, was “lured” there by four UNM students who “conspired” to attack him, police said in a Sunday report press release revealed.

The development follows the investigation by the New Mexico State Police Bureau of Investigation into the death of 19-year-old Brandon Travis, who was shot and killed Saturday by a 21-year-old NMSU student, later identified by reports as Peake, a junior on the Aggie’s men’s basketball team.

The altercation took place around 3 a.m. on the UNM campus, before a basketball game between the two schools. The game was later postponed due to the shooting.

According to law enforcement, Travis “conspired with a 17-year-old woman and two of them [his] male friends, all UNM students, to lure the 21-year-old victim onto the UNM campus and attack him.”

Travis and Peake suffered gunshot wounds as a result. Police said both men were armed, but Travis “confronted and shot the victim.” Peake then fatally shot Travis, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Investigators repeatedly referred to the 21-year-old NMSU student as a “victim” and noted that police did not identify the victims.
