The EPA Responsible Equipment Disposal Program recognizes 12 partners for achievements in equipment recycling

WASHINGTON — This month, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it has recognized 12 partners for excellence in appliance recycling under the Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program. The honors were announced as EPA marks the 16th year of program implementation and the third annual RAD Leadership Awards ceremony, held virtually as part of the annual RAD Partner Meeting.

“RAD partners always inspire us to achieve higher goals while supporting the health of communities through their achievements in recycling equipment that protects the ozone layer, fights climate change and reduces unnecessary landfill volume.” said Joe Goffman, deputy deputy chief administrator for the Bureau of Air and Radiation. “It is a privilege to celebrate the winners of the 2022 RAD Leadership Award. These partners lead by example, demonstrating dynamic innovation and collaboration, and demonstrating the highest standards and levels of workmanship in the safe disposal of equipment.”

For 16 years, partners in the EPA’s RAD program have used best environmental practices to collect and dispose of old cooling equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers. By committing to recover insulation foam from equipment, RAD partners take an admirable step beyond simply complying with federal laws on the recovery of refrigerants, waste oil, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). RAD partners are at the forefront of promoting the recycling of durable goods and encouraging the permanent shutdown of older, inefficient refrigerators from our energy grids. Since RAD’s founding in 2006, the commitment of RAD partners has resulted in significant environmental benefits: recycling more than 9.4 million refrigerators and reducing emissions of ozone-depleting substances by 1,996 ODP-weighted tonnes.

RAD Leadership Award winners were honored in three categories: the RAD Champion Award, the RAD Program Growth Award, and the RAD Ambassador Award.

  • That RAD Champion Award recognizes the RAD partners with the highest recovery rates of insulation foam in refrigeration equipment. This year’s ten honorees are General Electric Appliances (Louisville, Kentucky), Turlock Irrigation District (Turlock, California), Palo Alto Utilities (Palo Alto, California), Silicon Valley Power (Santa Clara, California), Modesto Irrigation District (Modesto , California), City of Burbank (Burbank, California), Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (Los Angeles, California), Sacramento Municipal Utility District (Sacramento, California), Georgia Power (Atlanta, Georgia), New Mexico Power (Albuquerque, NM).
  • That RAD Program Growth Award recognizes the top three RAD partners with the largest annual percentage increase in refrigeration units processed. This year’s winners are Delmarva Power (Washington, DC), Georgia Power (Atlanta, Georgia), City of Burbank (Burbank, California).
  • That RAD Ambassador Award was presented to Exquisite Property Services (EPS) (Newark, NJ) who have demonstrated best partner practices and promoted sustainability at every turn. EPS is a leader in the RAD network and its community, having initiated an important collaboration with the RAD team, promoting environmental justice and resonant communication about the benefits of RAD to communities, fostering relationships with new RAD partners and catalyzed a novel partnership model for equipment recycling with local employees, enabling EPS and any like-minded Newark community organization to recycle units in accordance with RAD’s best practices.
