The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) welcomed Naly Ramirez Aponte as the new program manager for the Center for Adult Education in early August.

Originally from Bucaramanga, Colombia, Ramirez Aponte relocated to New Mexico 2008 and graduated from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque with a Bachelor in Spanish and Linguistics.

For the past 12 years, Ramirez Aponte has worked as an English second Language and Spanish as a second language teacher. She worked in different institutions including UNM-LA and was the owner of Naly Ramírez – Se Habla Español, an educational institute offering private and small group Spanish classes in Los Alamos.

“Naly brings a wealth of experience in teaching English as a second language embodies the achievements that can be achieved by those learning English in the US context,” said Dr. Paul Allen, UNM-LA Dean of Instruction. “She is a role model for her students. She has incredible ideas for building the whole thing adult education program and we were very fortunate to land her in this role.”

UNM-LA Adult Education Center offers free English as a Second Language (ESL). classes and New Mexico High School Equivalency (HSE) prep classes. The classes have rolling enrollment, which allows students to join the course at any time during the course Session, making it easier to bypass schedules.

English as a second language classes are for students aged 16 and over designed to help anyone who wants to improve their English skills. There Sessions are multi-level, students often continue for multiple sessions to progress improve their English skills.

“It’s fun to communicate with different people in English. By taking the course, I was gradually be able to speak and hear English”, ESL student Megumi said Yamamoto.

ESL student Maria Saavedra said: “Thanks to the ESL classes I was able to get a job as a teacher’s assistant. I also signed up in an early childhood education program.”

High School Equivalency Prep Classes are for students ages 16 and up. students between the ages of 16 and 17 must have a completed minor permit form authorized. Students can take advantage of pre-tests, small groups and one-to-one tuition Tuition, tutoring support (subject to the availability of volunteer tutors), computer exercises, and independent study. The Center for Adult Education is committed to providing students with the full range of skills they need to succeed in college and in their chosen career.

The New Mexico HSE helps those who have earned their qualifications qualify higher-paying jobs, and for entry into college, undergraduate, or certificate programs. To If you earn the HSE, students may be eligible for UNM’s Bridge to Success Scholarship. the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship and New Mexico Lottery Scholarships. homeStudents are welcome to register.

All ESL and HSE classes are free, with study materials provided by state and government agencies federal funds.

“These programs are very important to me because when I moved to the United States, I was a English as a second language learner and I know how important it is to have a center which offers ESL and HSE courses for people from different backgrounds”, Ramirez said Aponte. “For that reason, I am committed to making this program a success and Promotion in our community and surrounding areas. I look forward to it To help students succeed in our program and achieve their goals. I will work towards that too Attracting new students to benefit from our FREE ESL courses, HSE courses and Citizenship classes here in Los Alamos and the surrounding area.”

ESL, HSE and Citizenship courses for the spring semester 2023 start on 01.01. 17, and there will be an orientation the previous week of January 9-13.

ESL grade levels include Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, a schedule can be created found on the web.
